The closing ceremony had a large crowd in attendance at St Fanchea’s after a successful Michaela Camp 2014

TO LEAD a life without limits is what many people across Fermanagh strive for.

And that core aim was instrumental in the set up of a summer camp dedicated to the life of Michaela McAreavey (Harte) – the Co Tyrone woman killed in Mauritius while on her honeymoon in January 2011.

Last week, 78 girls aged between 11 and 14 and from across Fermanagh took part in the Michaela Camp in St Fanchea’s College in Enniskillen for five days.

The Micheala Camp was established to share the values and beliefs of Michaela’s life and delivers five main elements.

These include faith, fashion, fun, failte and well-being.

Through these elements the young girls engaged in different activities and discussions, sharing their views and opinions which help empower them to be confident, unique and to embrace their talents.

The camp fosters a community atmosphere that allows ‘campettes’ – what the girls are known as – to build new friendships and leave with a new-found confidence.

Head-camp co-ordinator Marcella Scollan explained what the girls gain from the week-long experience: “It has been a crazy week but wonderful too.

“It’s been jam-packed and the girls have all been brilliant. It’s an unbelievable experience for everyone.

“The girls will take away a lot from this – they have all grown in confidence. They started out as a seed and come into a flower, it’s amazing to see the change in them. They have all made new friends, had fun and now know they can lead a life without limits.”

The 29-year-old from Kinawley added: “From 11 to 14 is a very impressionable age so what they get from us and from each other will help them through life.

“The ‘campettes’ have been making a sail, decorating bags, learned dance routines and so much more.

“I have loved doing this and delighted with how it all went.

“Preparations started back in March, while places were open in April and were gone within days. The demand for this had grown and evolved across the camps.”
