Fermanagh County Museum has received a landmark work of the complete oil paintings of William Scott (1913-1989) to mark his centenary.

The William Scott Catalogue Raisonné of Oil Paintings presents Scott’s paintings in four scholarly, meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated volumes.

Robert and James Scott, sons of William Scott, and Sarah Whitfield, the book’s editor, presented a signed copy of the Catalogue Raisonné to Sarah McHugh, Manager of Fermanagh County Museum Service.

After twenty years of research and seven years of writing, the Catalogue Raisonné charts the remarkable story of William Scott’s career during which he painted more than one thousand works in oil.

Speaking about the donation, Robert Scott said: “My father received his earliest art lessons in Enniskillen, under the tutelage of Kathleen Bridle so it is fitting that a testament of his career from those early beginnings to his success in the international art world be kept within the county to inspire others in return.”

Sarah McHugh, Manager of Museum Services said: “I am delighted that the Scott family has donated the Catalogue Raisonné to Fermanagh County Museum. It enhances the already impressive collection of William Scott art works within the Museum’s collections.  In fact, all the Museum’s collection of oil paintings feature throughout the Catalogue Raisonné.

The Raisonné recounts Scott’s earliest memories of Enniskillen and it highlights, both through his remarkable life story as well as through his paintings, how he was able to triumph through tragedy and adversity.

As Scott was first inspired in Enniskillen by Kathleen Bridle, so these volumes will inspire future generations of artists and art lovers.

In addition, next week, the Museum is holding its final phase of the successful exhibition and art project ‘Full Circle’ when local children visit the William Scott exhibition in the Ulster Museum.  This visit has been generously made possible by the Scott family.”

Local artist, Patricia Kelly is holding a workshop this Saturday, October 14th at Waterways Ireland from 2pm to 4pm....
