Council-backed Irish language courses ‘for all traditions’

Irish language course at Museum

‘IRISH is there for everybody’ was the message delivered as the fourth iteration of council-provided free Irish language classes.

The new classes will be launched tomorrow night, Thursday, at the Enniskillen castle museum, and tutor Sean O Murchada is joined by Fiona Crudden and PJ Mac an tSionnaigh.

“The main emphasis of the class will not be on rules and grammar, it’ll be based on subject matter from different aspects of people’s lives – from where you live to where you work, your pastimes, basic greetings,” Sean explained.

“That’s the way the classes will be structured.

“As best we can we’ll be trying to use the latest material on the internet as well.

“We’ll also be highlighting things like when it comes to Irish language events, language awareness throughout the year.”

The classes are provided free of charge through Fermanagh District Council as part of its Linguistic Diversity Policy through a service level agreement with the Ulster Council GAA.

There are three classes: Three classes: Beginners, intermediate and advanced.

“Traditionally we get more on the beginners level,” Sean continued.

“We try to emphasise that Irish is part of everybody’s heritage no matter what their background is.

“It’s gradually changing, and I think that’s why it’s very important that Fermanagh council is promoting this.

“We don’t ask people what their background is, we try to have the craic.”

The classes will run from September 2013 to March 2014.

Enrolment for these classes takes place at Enniskillen Castle Museums, Enniskillen on Thursday 19 September 2013 at 7.30pm.
