Gerry Guthrie is looking forward to his Enniskillen gig

THE MONDAY night Country gig in Enniskillen has certainly built up steam over the last number of months, and, at the end of this month, Mayo based musician, Gerry Guthrie and band will take to the stage in the Enniskillen Hotel for the second time in a number of months.

“We were in Enniskillen about 12 weeks ago in the Enniskillen Hotel, we’d a great night in it,” Gerry told Country and Western Focus this week.

“We put out our second album last November called ‘Good Country Songs’, and it’s going well for us,” he added.
Born in Ballina, County Mayo, where he still lives, Gerry showed a keen interest in music from a young age and first began playing with a local group at the age of 15.

Gerry has cited his musical influences as including Duane Eddy, Hank Marvin, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Garth Brooks, Gene Watson and on the Irish scene Jimmy Buckley, Ray Lynam and Matt Leavy.

Remembering his gig in Enniskillen several months ago, Gerry said: “We were very happy with the crowd we got. It was the first time we were playing in Enniskillen town with the band – it was a good night. There are only two Monday night gigs in the North of Ireland that I know of – and it’s great that it’s got going.”

He was also full of praise for the Northern Irish country scene in general.

“Northern Ireland in general has a very healthy country music scene. I’d say it’s the strongest province in the entire country for this kind of music  The gigs are full of a lot of different age profiles, young and old.

Ahead of his performance on July 29, he said:

“We will be doing a mix of Irish and American country – a bit of rock n roll thrown in too. Absolutely I’m looking forward to it. Like I say we’d a great night last time we were here and hopefully we’ll have the same again.”
