History will come alive on Saturday to mark St Lucia Day

THIS SATURDAY, May 25, the Inniskillings Museum at Enniskillen Castle will come alive when a living history group mark St Lucia Day.

Saturday will be a great day to visit the museum as a living history group will entertain the public throughout the afternoon with fifes and drums and provide opportunities for photography as well as recounting some of the Inniskillings regimental histories.

The group will be in attendance to commemorate the most significant day for the Inniskilling Fusiliers Regiment – St. Lucia Day.
The regiment was dispatched to the island of St. Lucia in 1796, as part of the wars against France, and it was here that it distinguished itself in the storming of the French fortress of Morne Fortune.

In recognition of its gallantry the regiment was allowed the unique honour of flying the regimental flag above the fortress for one hour before the raising of the Union Jack. St. Lucia became one of the regiment’s most important battle honours, and St. Lucia Day (May 24) is still commemorated every year by the Inniskillings on the Saturday closest to the date.

The Living History demonstration will take place between 2pm and 4pm and the museum will be open for visits during this time, as well as information available regarding St. Lucia Day and its place in the history of the Inniskillings. Normal admission fees apply to the Enniskillen Castle Complex.
