FASHION FOCUS
By SHARON IRVINE
I have been told on numerous occasions that I don’t do enough fashion pages aimed at men and this is very true so I have decided to make more of an effort to study men’s fashion in a bit more detail from now on and try to do more ‘male appropriate’ fashion pages in future.
After getting a Facebook message from Fermanagh Herald journalist and fellow fashion enthusiast Ryan Smith I decided to make this week’s column one for the boys. As I have already looked at a number of the women’s wear trends for this season in detail I realised it was about time I had a look at the men’s wear trends and point all you fashion conscious guys in the right direction to what your wardrobe must haves should be this season. Unlike women’s wear trends it can be difficult to spot specific themes within men’s wear and to be honest they are not always as obvious but when you study properly you can see themes emerging. Here are some of the main trends for Spring
Summer 2013.
Electric dreams
The summer might not shape up to be as hot as we want it to but one thing is for sure; men’s wear this season will certainly have a burst of brightness. The colour of the season emerged on the world’s catwalks and it was seen from Richard Nicoll to Alexander McQueen. The colour on every designers mind was blue and not just one shade of blue but the brightest shades of electric blue, aqua blue, baby blue and sky blue. So don’t feel blue about the weather just get into blue.
Prints
You will always find many types of print shirts for men in the shops and this season is no exception. We all know how check shirts always go down a treat in Fermanagh but you will find no check shirts on the catwalks of Milan, Paris, New York or London. What you will see is everything from camouflage print, polka dots, gingham and stripes, however not just in shirts and tops but also in jackets, trousers and shorts.
The Great Gatsby
Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton described her collection as ‘Male Vanity’ at its finest. If you are fond of looking super suave and have a suit collection that would put Prince William to shame this is definitely your look of the season. McQueen wasn’t the only designer with a nod to the dapper Jay Gatsby; Hackett of London went for it in full force with their preppy ‘Oxbridge’ collection which was a complete look back to a time of sheer refined elegance.
Beach Boys
I am not sure how this particular trend will go down with Fermanagh men considering we see more than our fair share of rain over the summer months and we don’t have many surf dudes. This trend pays tribute to California’s surf and skater culture with cut off shorts, bright colours, loud prints and lightweight materials. If you are a fan of skating or surfing this is the one for you but personally I don’t know many men who will take on this trend.
