Belnaleck residents fear the worst on accident black spot

THE Chairman for the Bellanaleck Community Group believes that action needs to be taken on a dangerous stretch of road in the village before a fatality occurs.

Speaking to the Fermanagh Herald, Derrick Graham said that it should not take ‘the ultimate price’ to be paid before more road safety measures were introduced.

Mr Graham was speaking in relation to road safety in the village following the latest crash on the same spot on the Derrylin road.

The crash saw a car smash into the wall of a private house. It follows on from two separate crashes involving heavy goods vehicles at the same location in recent years.

The community group have been lobbying politicians, the police, as well as Roads Service in order to get measures put in place to try and reduce the volume of accidents. Mr Graham fears for the future should nothing be done to improve the situation.

“It is my personal opinion that if something were to happen and nothing had been done despite all the warnings we are giving, then those who did nothing would be culpable.”

Only accidents that involve injury or death are taken into account when compiling accident figures, and only one accident on this stretch of road has caused injury in recent years. But, the Community Group believes that this low figure is down to good luck.
