New hospital, new era…
At 8am tomorrow, Thursday June 21, the new South West Acute Hospital opens its doors to patients.
Three years after construction began on the site at Wolf Lough just outside Enniskillen the new 312 bed hospital, built at a costof £276 million, is ready to go. And as the new hospital opens its doors the hospital it replaces, the Erne, will close.
The South-West Acute Hospital is the first hospital in Northern Ireland to be built with 100% single ensuite rooms and over £20 million has been spent on the latest equipment and technology, making the new hospital one of the most technologically advanced in Europe.
The South-West Acute Hospital is also a teaching hospital linked with Queens University in Belfast and already exploring potential links with NUI in Galway.
The new hospital is three times the size of the one it replaces running to 65,000 square metres.
