Late heartbreak for hurlers
IN what was the first-ever appearance by a Fermanagh hurling team at Croke Park, the Erne county were beaten by a late, late point by Tyrone in a pulsating 90-plus minute Lory Meagher Cup final.
In a high-octane, high-scoring thriller, the first of three All-Ireland hurling finals played at Croke Park last Saturday, Tyrone, winners in 2009 just got there on a scoreline of 2-24 to 3-20 (30 points to 29).
Fermanagh were gutted at the end but, afterwards, in the quiet of their dressing-room underneath the stadium, the management and players resolved to bring home the trophy next year.
Lory Meagher, a three-times All Ireland winner with Kilkenny in the 1924 -1937 era, is regarded as one of the finest exponents of the game.
