PREGNANT women in Fermanagh have spoken of their fears following the recent deaths of three new born babies in the Belfast hospital affected by the pseudomonas virus.
Edel Donnelly from Belcoo said there was a lot of fear: “We need to know what to look out for as there is a lot of panic out there and I know this from speaking to other expecting mothers.”
“When you are pregnant it’s your natural instinct to fear the worst which is why I hope that the Erne hospital is taking the necessary precautions but pregnant women need to know more, they should be giving expecting mothers more information.
“I think even if they mentioned it to the mothers at their anti-natal appointments, how it can be contracted and what the symptoms are, and what to look out for, it would put a lot of expecting mothers at ease.
Enniskillen mother Claire Coyle is expecting her third baby in March. “It is frightening to think your new born is in the best place possible for their needs, only for something like this to happen.
“It should be the happiest time of your life and has turned into a nightmare for the parents of the tragic little babies.
“I have the upmost respect for the for the staff of the maternity and neo-natal unit and I think the work they do is amazing however I really hope that hygeine practices have been stepped up and will be maintained at the highest level,” she added.
