POLICE cars will no longer escort ambulances to hospitals. However, trained motorcycle teams will be used instead.
The decision follows a serious traffic collision involving an ambulance near Brookeborough a year ago.
Last January six people, including a doctor, two paramedics, and two nurses from the Erne Hospital, were in the ambulance when it left the road at the Station Road junction at about 3.30 in the afternoon. Four people were taken to hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening while a fifth person was taken to hospital with more serious injuries.
At the time, the ambulance was taking a seriously ill patient from the Erne hospital to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, and the ambulance was being escorted by a police vehicle. The accident also involved a flat-bed lorry.
